We have many Christmas Traditions here at The Cottonwood House!

We thought we would share one of our Favorites with You. 

Christmas Breakfast Cake 

Every Christmas Morning our Kids, (and now their kids!) line up Youngest to Oldest, and one by one walk into the living room to see what Santa has brought them! Each squeal makes our kids that are patiently waiting their turn more and more anxious to see what their siblings received, and to see what is waiting for them!

Each Child opens their presents individually, to make the joy and excitement of Christmas morning last just a little longer! 

Finally when the presents are unwrapped, the colorful wrapping paper and shiny bows are thrown away, (and my husband and I are ready for a nap!) its time for breakfast! 

3 Cups Flour

2 TBS Baking Powder

1 Cup Sugar 

A Pinch of Salt 

1 Cup Shortening 

1/3 Cups Milk 

2 Eggs

Mix together Flour, Baking Powder, Sugar, and Salt.

Add Milk and Eggs. 

Blend Well. 

Pour into GREASED 9"X11" Pan.

8 TBS Flour 

12 TBS Sugar 

6 TBS Butter 

1 TSP Cinnamon 

1/2 Cups Brown Sugar

Combine together and mix well. Sprinkle on top of batter.

Bake at 375 for 30-40 minutes, or until center is done.

Let's Make the Most of It! 

Today's recipe is sure to make your mouth water! 

Brownie Cookies

Ingredients:

2 C chopped pecans

1/2 C butter, cut into pieces

4 oz unsweetened baking chocolate, chopped

3 C semisweet chocolate chips

1 1/2 C all-purpose flour

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

4 eggs

1 1/2 C sugar

2 tsp vanilla 

Directions: 

1. Heat oven to 350. Spread pecans in ungreased shallow pan. Bake uncovered 6 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until light brown. Set aside. 

2. In 3-quart heavy saucepan, cook butter, baking chocolate and 1 1/2 C of chocolate chips over low heat, stirring constantly, until butter and chocolate are melted. Remove from heat; cool.

3. In medium bowl, mix flour, baking powder and salt; set aside. In large bowl, beat eggs, sugar and vanilla with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended. On low speed, gradually beat in flour mixture. Add chocolate mixture; beat well. Stir in toasted pecans and remaining 1 1/2 C chocolate chips.

4. Line cookie sheet with cooking parchment paper. Onto cookie sheets, drop dough by 2 TBS 1 inch apart. Bake 10 minutes. Cool 2 minutes; remove from cookie sheets to cooling racks.

Now, onto some comfort food! This recipe is our Family's FAVORITE go-to soup dishes!

French Onion Soup

Ingredients:

1/2 C unsalted butter

2 TBS olive oil

4 C sliced onions

4 (10.5 ounce) cans beef broth

1 TSP dried thyme

salt and pepper to taste

4 slices French Bread

4 slices provolone cheese 

2 slices Swiss cheese, diced

1/4 C grated Parmesan cheese

Directions: 

1. Melt butter with olive oil in an 8 quart pot on medium heat. Add onions and continually stir until tender. Do not brown the onions.

2. Add beef broth and thyme. Season with salt and pepper, and simmer for 30 minutes.

3. Heat the oven broiler.

4. Ladle soup into oven safe serving bowls and place one slice of bread on top of each (bread may be broken into pieces if you prefer.) Layer each slice of bread with a slice of provolone, 1/2 slice diced Swiss and 1 TBS Parmesan cheese. Place bowls on cookie sheet and broil in the preheated oven until cheese bubbles and browns slightly.

Ready to Take A Ride on Santa's Sleigh?

NO-BAKE Pretzel and Candy Reindeer

This recipe is from Pillsbury.com

Ingredients: 

12 oz. Vanilla-flavored candy coating or almond bark, cut into pieces

24 caramel corn-flavored miniature rice cakes

48 miniature pretzel twists

48 chocolate chips

24 red cinnamon candies

Directions:

1. Line cookie sheet with waxed paper. In medium saucepan, melt candy coating over low heat, stirring constantly.

2. For each Rudolph, dip rice cake in candy coating; place on waxed paper-lined cookie sheet. Dip rounded side of 2 pretzels in candy coating; place on cookie sheet on each side of rice cake to resemble antlers.

3. Decorate with chocolate chips for eyes and cinnamon candy for nose. Let stand 15 minutes or until set. Carefully remove from waxed paper; store in tightly covered container.

1894 Cottonwood House Homemade Hot Chocolate 

 1 8-Quart Box Instant Nonfat Dry Milk
1 6-8 Ounce Powdered Cream Nestle Coffee Mate
1 Pound Box Quick Nestle Nesquik -Chocolate Flavor-
1 Cup Powdered Sugar
1 3 Ounce Box Vanilla INSTANT Pudding

Combine all the ingredients. Mix Well. Put in container with lid. Measure 1/3 C mix to 1 C HOT water. Stir.
